'Let me take a photoie…….'

Today has been a very exciting day! The fashion editorial for the project was shot! 

As mentioned in earlier posts, and it all happened today. I collaborated for the shoot, with photographer Claire Basik, make up artist Kimberely Lumsdon and two models , Frankie and Abbe from J'Adore Models , Manchester.

The shoot took place in a studio above a bar called 'The Terrace', on Thomas Street in Manchester and as well as having basic editorial shots,  the models also posed within the prop that I have made for the window display.

I am so pleased with the overall look and final images from the shoot. Images below show a few of the images from behind the scenes following our successful day at the Studio.

Meeting Claire Basik.....

Today I met with photographer Claire Basik, to discuss a future collaboration with each other.

Claire , like myself has the personal experience of loosing a parent to cancer. She also based her own honours project on her experience and feelings and this was entitled 'Manipulated cells' - diary of a cancer suffers daughter.

Claire gained publications in several magazines and this is a link to her blog, which Claire wrote during her mother's battle and I can understand and relate to her feelings and thoughts during this time.

At the moment this picture truly sums up how I feel, with managing a young family, the final honours project and deadlines looming alongside dealing with the grief and adjustment of life after dads passing.

So back to today, since leaving university Claire is now a freelance photographer and through posting an advert on twitter, she answered my call for help! 

In particular, I am drawn to Claire's images from a shoot she took to promote Charlotte Hudders, who is a silk designer and has recently launched a series of scarfs.

To me the images that she produce a feeling that they are from an 'Anthropology' catalogue.

After a few cups of tea , Claire and I have developed a time plan and are going to be working together in the next week to produce the images for my photo shoot. I myself are very excitied as Claire had some fantastic ideas for my projects and she also gave me some further ideas for this project.

So…how does your £3 nomakeupselfie donation help Cancer research?…well let me tell you...

Today, Thursday 20th March I went to the Cancer Research Institute in Manchester. I wanted to understand the process of how cancer develops and I also wanted to know more knowledge about the disease and how it can be treated.

Stuart Pepper, Chief laboratory Officer, introduced himself to the group and I. Luckily it was only a small group of 4 of us , myself and 3 others, who wanted to see the facilities as they are holding a fund raising event through their employers.

The Manchester Institute, started before Cancer research Uk and the site has over a hundreds years heritage into the research of cancer.

£12m per year is raised to help fund the Institute and this helps to govern a group of 12 research groups , which eventually will be expanding to 17 groups. The research groups are made up of 250 scientists. The Institute is situated next to Christies hospital, Manchester and is affiliated with the University of Manchester.

Due to the funding raised via Cancer research UK , the institute is a very independent due to this. Through the research, they are trying to understand cancer, find new ways to treat and diagnose it  which in turn leads to patient  benefits and they also also trying to detect cancer earlier.

Statistic time!

In the UK 333,000 people are diagnosed with cancer. This means 1 in 3 people will develop during their life time and this will result in 1 in 4 deaths. There are over 200 different types of cancer. (Cancer Research UK, 2014)

THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING HOW CELLS WORK

Every minute of each day the following cells are produced

  • 300 million new red blood cells 
  • 12,000 new gut cells
  • 40,000 new skin cells
This is a tight control process and its the process of how our bodies work. In order for this process to work , proteins inside the cells sends signals.

These signals are controlled by DNA , this is made up of a double helix and is known as a human GENO (very important!!)  Damage to the DNA results in a domino effect.

Cancer happens when the instructions inside the cells are faulty. it takes only one cell for this whole sequence to go wrong and this results in a tumour/ cancer growth.

Any way , enough of the scientific theory, however to understand the tour properly you need to understand the background knowledge of how cancer develops.

So here is images from todays tour. A very big thank you to Stuart Pepper, Steve Bagley and of course Hannah Leaton. It has certainly helped me understand things more clearer.

Microscope which takes magnifies the cells and takes photographs of the cell development over a 5 day period. this is crucial research as it shows how a call develops over a time period

same microscope as above. These are houses underneath the main offices in the basement and have to be kept at a certain temperature in order for the cells to reproduce.

This is another microscopic imaging machine. This image shows how a cell travels which s also key into research. 

A whole room was taken up by this huge microscope (same as above) Laser light beams are used to enable the scientists to get a closer look inside.


Manchester Institute of Cancer research.

Site of new Manchester Cancer research centre being built. I was shown into the visitors centre, were an artists impression and slideshow was shown. The design also integrates the community and allows them to participate in visiting the centre.

Right this is such an important part of cancer research. This machine is a GENO machine. It helps to find out what causes the GENO within a person to make them develop cancer.. This machine costs £250,000 and is used 4 times a month, once a week or 52 times a year.  Over 20,000 people are treated at Christies each year and by using the GENO machine, this helps determine the exact treatment to use to help treat that persons particular cancer.

This robot will decanter out experiments into small petri dishes (see images to gain an insight into how small the space is) This robot costs around £160,000 and can decanter over 96 samples at once.

Another example of petri dishes. This sample can hold over 196 experiments. This enables different drugs to be added to a particular cancer sample to experiment how the drugs reacts and whether it is successful or not.

Slowly piecing together the puzzle!

Slowly my honours project is now taking shape. 

However at the moment I am struggling to gain access to WGSN - the trend setting website used by the fashion industry,  so hopefully I will be able to produce more trend mood boards.

Here is a selection of mood / research boards I have produce so far for this project.

These following four board are based upon my retail brand - 'Anthropologie' , this section will be continued to be updated as I am forever finding out facts, figures and statistics for this brand.

Radiant Orchid is the pantone colour of the Year 2014. Keep an eye out for an update on this section (once I have log in details for WGSN!)

Trends 2014 - Pantone colour of the year
 By researching into the founding year of Anthropologie - 1992, I wanted to find links within the brand and my theme of cells.  how thrilled I was when I came across this information.

An obvious link is the name 'Anthoropologie' , which means the behaviour of human beings, however I wanted to dig deeper and found something more clever and unusual.

Edwin G.Krebs (1918-2008) and Edmond H.Fischer (1920) were both awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and medicine in 1992. They were awarded it for the discovery  of reversible protein phosphorylation as biological mechanism.

Phosphorylation is the action of regulating protein and transmitting signals within a cell.

 So whats protein got to do with a cells I asked myself, well proteins are in-fact the building blocks within a  cell .They determine nearly every task of a cell's life, this includes cell shape, inner organisation, product manufacture and routine maintenance.

So basically they both discovered how to switch the function of a cell on and off. which has later helped develop a break through within the development of cancer treatment along with other illness to.

A hormone signal will act on a protein within or on a cell and this will then send further series of signals which will then tell the cell to produce by diving. However a mutation (a gene which maybe lost or damaged) can occur and this can result in either too much protein being produced or not enough is made.

It can take a long time before mutations happen for a cell to become cancerous and this is why most types of cancers are more common in the elderly.

The discovery by Krebs & Fischer has lead to scientists being enable to develop cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and others as they understand now how to switch the off the functions of a cell.
This has certainly been on hard lesson to learn as I do not understand cell biology at all, but through the help from both friends and family I have managed to piece together a general understanding of this development.
Any way this is another step forward into piecing together the jigsaw pieces within my honours project.

Now the fun part has started!

I have begun to research into cancer cells, their form, texture, patterns and colour combinations in preparation to my visit to the cancer research lab in Manchester next week.

I am working in a small A5 sketchbook at the moment to collect my findings. This sketchbook will record research, statistics, anything that I am inspired by within this project and also my own experiments and samples that I have created.

Cancer cells as art!


Cell No 4 - Angela Canada Hopkins


Furthering my research into cancer cells and their forms, I came across an artist - Angela Canada Hopkins.

Hopkins, like myself lost her father in June 2001 to cancer and she too decided to channel her emotions through art and design.

'Cancer is a difficult subject to tackle, but when it touched my life, I took inspiration from the challenge.
After my father died from cancer in June 2001, I decided the best way to overcome my new "enemy" was by embracing it through art.  I initially painted the disease by deconstructing microscope slides of cancer cells and reinterpreted them.  Creating the work has deepened my understanding of the disease and changed my outlook.  Recently, my work has progressed to a more abstract style that references general characteristics of molecular patterns and shapes. '

Hopkins takes slides of the microscope cells and creates her own interpretation. She wanted to make something positive and replace her negative thoughts on the subject matter.

I feel that her painting are bright and colourful, although I am aware of what they are, I feel comfort by looking at her images.

I hope to create a similar feeling as Hopkins has done through her work, and raise awareness within the viewing public, without them realising the true extent of the images content.

Hopkins images are now being used within a variety of commercial places, with recently a painting was chosen for the jacket of a novel by 'The Abundance: A Novel' .

Rich Pratcher , art director at Henry Holt and Company, who sought out Hopkins work, says 

“I thought the description of the unusual beauty in something so destructive fit harmoniously with the novel"
